LISS
Also called: Linear Imaging Self-scanning Sensor · Topic: Remote Sensing, GIS and GNSS · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 6 "Introduction to Remote Sensing"
Meaning
LISS (Linear Imaging Self-scanning Sensor) is the series of multispectral cameras on India's IRS satellites. Multispectral means each camera records several bands, such as green, red and near infrared. LISS cameras are pushbroom scanners. A straight line of detectors records a whole strip of ground at once. LISS-I (72.5 m) and LISS-II (36.25 m) flew on IRS-1A in 1988. LISS-III (23 m) came on IRS-1C in 1995, along with a separate PAN (panchromatic) camera at 5.8 m. Each new LISS could see smaller objects than the one before.
Example
In NCERT's Resourcesat-1 images of Najafgarh, Delhi (2005), the LISS bands show fresh water as dark in the infrared band and dry land as bright in the green band.
Don't confuse with
- PAN camera: it records one broad band in black and white with a finer pixel. LISS records several colour bands.
