Oceansat
Also called: EOS-06 · Topic: Remote Sensing, GIS and GNSS · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Oceansat is ISRO's series of satellites for studying the oceans. They map chlorophyll, the green pigment of tiny floating plants called phytoplankton. Fish gather where phytoplankton is plentiful, so chlorophyll maps point to potential fishing zones. The satellites also measure sea-surface winds, which helps with weather and cyclone forecasts. Oceansat-3, also called EOS-06, was launched in 2022.
Example
Fishers along the Kerala and Gujarat coasts can get potential fishing zone advisories drawn from Oceansat data. This saves fuel and time at sea.
Don't confuse with
- Resourcesat: it mainly watches land, such as crops, soil and water bodies. Oceansat watches the sea.
