Resourcesat
Also called: IRS-P6 · Topic: Remote Sensing, GIS and GNSS · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 6 "Introduction to Remote Sensing"
Meaning
Resourcesat is an Indian remote sensing satellite series for watching natural resources. Resourcesat-1 was launched in 2003 under the name IRS-P6. It carried three sensors. LISS-III gave 23 m images, LISS-IV gave sharper images and AWiFS (Advanced Wide Field Sensor) covered a very wide strip for frequent views. Together they track crops, land use and water. Resourcesat-2 and 2A later continued the mission.
Example
NCERT shows Resourcesat-1 images of Najafgarh, Delhi (2005). Fresh water looks dark in the infrared band (band 4), and dry surfaces look bright in the green band (band 2).
Don't confuse with
- Cartosat: it makes very sharp images for mapping and terrain models. Cartosat-3 (2019) reaches about 25 cm. Resourcesat is built for resource monitoring.
