Geography glossary

Also called: Manas National Park · Topic: Biodiversity and its Conservation · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 2 "Forest and Wildlife Resources"

Meaning

Manas Tiger Reserve lies in Assam, along the border with Bhutan. It was one of the first nine reserves when Project Tiger began in 1973. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. It was on UNESCO's "in danger" list from 1992 to 2011 and was taken off after it recovered. Manas is also a biosphere reserve (1989), though it is not on UNESCO's biosphere list.

Example

Manas shelters rare animals such as the golden langur, the pygmy hog and the wild water buffalo. The pygmy hog is the world's smallest wild pig and is Critically Endangered. A small group of one-horned rhinos also lives here.

Don't confuse with

  • Kaziranga National Park: also in Assam and also a World Heritage Site from 1985. Kaziranga lies on the Brahmaputra floodplain and holds about two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinos. Manas is on the Bhutan border and is best known for the golden langur and pygmy hog.
