Sariska Tiger Reserve
Topic: Biodiversity and its Conservation · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 2 "Forest and Wildlife Resources"
Meaning
Sariska Tiger Reserve lies in the Aravalli hills of Alwar district, Rajasthan. By 2004–05, poachers had killed all its tigers. In 2008, tigers were brought in from Ranthambore. This was India's first relocation of tigers to restock a reserve. Sariska shows that a reserve can lose all its tigers if protection fails, and that they can be brought back.
Example
Villagers around Sariska fought against mining in the reserve by citing the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972. This makes Sariska an example of local people using conservation law to protect their forest.
Don't confuse with
- Ranthambore Tiger Reserve: also in Rajasthan and one of the first nine reserves under Project Tiger. Ranthambore was the source of the tigers. Sariska was the reserve that received them.
