Periyar Tiger Reserve
Topic: Biodiversity and its Conservation · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 2 "Forest and Wildlife Resources"
Meaning
Periyar Tiger Reserve is a protected forest in the Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts of Kerala, in the Western Ghats. It lies around the lake formed by the Mullaperiyar dam, built in 1895. The reserve is known for its elephants. It is also a model of ecotourism run by local communities. Ecotourism means nature tourism that earns money for local people while protecting wildlife.
Example
Local communities that once depended on the forest now work as guides and patrol staff in Periyar. This gives them an income from protecting the forest instead of using it up. Periyar is part of the Western Ghats and Sri Lanka biodiversity hotspot.
Don't confuse with
- Periyar river: the river flows across Kerala. The tiger reserve is the protected forest around the dam lake in the river's upper reaches.
