Topic: The National Movement: Gandhian Era · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 3 "Mahatma Gandhi and the Nationalist Movement"
Meaning
Bipin Chandra Pal (1858–1932) was a nationalist leader from Bengal. He was one of the militant trio called "Lal, Bal and Pal", together with Lala Lajpat Rai and Bal Gangadhar Tilak. During the Swadeshi movement of 1905–07 he called for boycott of British goods and for swadeshi, which means using Indian-made goods. He also called for national education. The movement opposed the Partition of Bengal. Pal's fiery speeches helped spread Congress politics beyond a small elite.
Example
During the Swadeshi movement of 1905–07, Pal toured and spoke widely. He urged Indians to boycott foreign cloth and set up their own schools. Along with Lajpat Rai and Tilak, he stood against the Moderates, such as Gokhale, inside the Congress.
Don't confuse with
- Bipan Chandra: a modern historian of the national movement, not a leader of it.
