Daulatabad
Also called: Devagiri · Topic: Turkic Invasions and the Delhi Sultanate · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 1 "Through the Eyes of Travellers"
Meaning
Daulatabad was earlier called Devagiri. It is a city in Maharashtra, near present-day Sambhaji Nagar. In the 14th century, Muhammad bin Tughlaq moved his capital there from Delhi, perhaps because it was more central. People were forced to travel over 1,000 km. The plan failed, and the capital went back to Delhi. Some sources say both moves caused great loss of life.
Example
The Moroccan traveller Ibn Battuta visited in the 14th century. He wrote that Daulatabad was as large as Delhi. He described its Tarababad, a market for singers and musicians.
Don't confuse with
- Token currency: this was another scheme of Muhammad bin Tughlaq. Copper coins were declared equal in value to silver or gold. It was a separate experiment that also failed.
