History glossary

Also called: Tughluq dynasty · Topic: Turkic Invasions and the Delhi Sultanate · NCERT: Class 8, Ch 2 "Reshaping India's Political Map"

Meaning

The Tughlaq dynasty was the third of the five dynasties of the Delhi Sultanate. It ruled from 1320 to 1414. It came after the Khiljis and before the Sayyids. Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq founded it. Under his son Muhammad bin Tughlaq, the Sultanate reached its largest size.

Example

Under Muhammad bin Tughlaq, most of the subcontinent came under one ruler for the first time since the Mauryan Empire, though only for a short time. Later, Firuz Shah Tughlaq built canals and new towns. In 1398, Timur sacked Delhi, and the dynasty never recovered.

Don't confuse with

  • Khilji dynasty: this was the second dynasty, which ruled just before the Tughlaqs. Ala-ud-din Khilji and his general Malik Kafur belong to it, not to the Tughlaqs.
