Musunuri Nayakas

History glossary

Topic: Turkic Invasions and the Delhi Sultanate · NCERT: Class 8, Ch 2 "Reshaping India's Political Map"

Meaning

The Musunuri Nayakas were Telugu chiefs. In the 14th century they fought the Delhi Sultanate in the Telangana region. Their leaders were Prolaya Nayaka and, after him, Kapaya Nayaka. They brought together more than 75 local chieftains into one group, called a confederacy. Their story shows that local Indian rulers could join hands to resist Delhi's rule in the south.

Example

Around 1330–1336, the Musunuri Nayakas' confederacy drove Muhammad bin Tughlaq's army out of Warangal, in present-day Telangana. This ended Delhi's control over that region.

Don't confuse with

  • Harihara and Bukka: they were once governors under Muhammad bin Tughlaq. They later broke away and founded the Vijayanagara Empire. The Musunuri Nayakas were a different group of Telugu chiefs.
