Meaning

Tughlaqabad Fort is a huge fortified city in Delhi. Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq built it in the 1320s, soon after he founded the Tughlaq dynasty. Its walls are made of rough stone and slope inward, which made them very strong. It shows the military style of early Tughlaq buildings.

Example

Legend says Ghiyasuddin quarrelled with the Sufi saint Nizamuddin Auliya, who then cursed the city to stay empty. The city was in fact abandoned soon after Ghiyasuddin died in 1325. His tomb stands next to it and also has sloping walls.

Don't confuse with

  • Firuz Shah Kotla: this was the citadel of Firozabad, built later, in c. 1354, by Firuz Shah Tughlaq. It has an Ashokan pillar.
