Meaning

Jaipur is a planned walled city in Rajasthan. Sawai Jai Singh II, the Kachhwaha ruler of Amber, founded it in 1727. It was laid out on a grid, meaning straight, wide streets crossing each other at right angles and dividing the city into blocks, using ideas from old Indian texts on building. It is a rare early example of town planning in India. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019.

Example

The city's buildings were painted pink in 1876 to welcome the Prince of Wales, which is why it is called the "Pink City". Inside the walled city stand the City Palace, the Hawa Mahal and the Jantar Mantar observatory.

Don't confuse with

  • Amber (Amer): the older Kachhwaha capital and hill fort near Jaipur. Amber Fort is part of the UNESCO Hill Forts of Rajasthan, not the Jaipur City site.
