Meaning
The Vijay Stambha, or Tower of Victory, is a nine-storeyed tower inside Chittorgarh fort in Mewar. Rana Kumbha built it in the mid-15th century. It celebrates his victory over Sultan Mahmud Khalji of Malwa. It is a fine example of Rajput building and stone carving.
Example
The tower rises to about 37 metres at Chittorgarh and was completed c. 1448. Its walls are covered with carvings of Hindu gods and goddesses, and visitors can climb up through its floors on inside stairs.
Don't confuse with
- Kirti Stambha: an older and smaller Jain tower in the same fort, built c. 12th century and dedicated to the Jain teacher Adinath. It does not celebrate any battle.
