Meaning

Kumbhalgarh is a fort in Mewar built by Rana Kumbha in the 15th century. It stands in the Aravalli hills, with forests and steep slopes all around, which made it very hard to attack. It is famous for its 36-kilometre wall, one of the longest continuous walls in the world. It shows how the Rajputs used hills and strong forts to resist bigger armies.

Example

Maharana Pratap was born at Kumbhalgarh in 1540. In 2013 the fort was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the "Hill Forts of Rajasthan", together with Chittorgarh, Amber and others.

Don't confuse with

  • Chittorgarh: the older main capital of Mewar, also strengthened by Rana Kumbha. It is the site of the Vijay Stambha and of famous sieges. Kumbhalgarh was a safer hill refuge.
