Mewar
Topic: Regional Resistance: Rajputs, Ahoms, Sikhs · NCERT: Class 8, Ch 2 "Reshaping India's Political Map"
Meaning
Mewar was a Rajput kingdom in southern Rajasthan. It was ruled by the Sisodia clan, first from Chittorgarh and later from Udaipur. After the Khilji conquests, Mewar rebuilt itself and became one of the two main Rajput powers. It never accepted Mughal rule, which made it the leading centre of Rajput resistance.
Example
Rana Kumbha (15th century) fought off the regional sultans. Rana Sanga united Rajput clans but lost to Babur at Khanwa. Maharana Pratap fought the Mughals at Haldighati in 1576 and then kept up guerrilla war from the Aravallis. A Bhil warrior on the Mewar emblem honours the Bhil archers who helped him.
Don't confuse with
- Marwar: the other big Rajput kingdom, ruled by the Rathores from Jodhpur. Under Aurangzeb, Durgadas Rathore fought for Marwar, not Mewar.
