Lucknow session of 1916

History glossary

Also called: Lucknow Congress 1916 · Topic: The National Movement: Gandhian Era · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 3 "Mahatma Gandhi and the Nationalist Movement"

Meaning

This was the Congress session held at Lucknow in December 1916. It mattered for two reasons. First, the Moderates and the Extremists came back together after their split at Surat in 1907. Second, the Congress and the Muslim League signed the Lucknow Pact. Under this pact the Congress accepted separate electorates for Muslims, which meant Muslims would vote for their own candidates. The two parties also agreed on joint demands for reform.

Example

At this session a peasant from Champaran, Raj Kumar Shukla, came to Gandhi. He asked for help against the British indigo planters who were harming tenants. This led Gandhi to Champaran in 1917, his first satyagraha in India.

Don't confuse with

  • Lucknow Pact: The Pact was the Congress–League agreement made at this session. The session itself is the wider meeting, which also brought the Moderates and Extremists back together.
