Madhavrao I

History glossary

Also called: Peshwa Madhavrao · Topic: The Marathas · NCERT: Class 8, Ch 3 "The Marathas"

Meaning

Madhavrao I was the Peshwa, or chief minister, of the Marathas from 1761 to 1772. He took charge right after the Marathas lost badly to the Afghans at Panipat in 1761. In about ten years he rebuilt Maratha power. The word Peshwa is Persian for "prime minister". By his time the Peshwa held more real power than the Chhatrapati, the Maratha king.

Example

After Panipat, Madhavrao I fought and pushed back the Nizam of Hyderabad and Hyder Ali of Mysore in the Deccan. He also sent armies north again. Under him, Mahadji Shinde retook Delhi in 1771, only ten years after Panipat.

Don't confuse with

  • Bajirao I: an earlier Peshwa who led the Maratha push across India before Panipat. Madhavrao I's role was to rebuild after Panipat.
  • Peshwa Baji Rao II: the last Peshwa, who lost to the British in 1818.
