Rajaram
Also called: Chhatrapati Rajaram · Topic: The Marathas · NCERT: Class 8, Ch 3 "The Marathas"
Meaning
Rajaram was Shivaji's younger son. He became Chhatrapati, or Maratha king, in 1689, after the Mughals executed his elder brother Sambhaji. He ruled until 1700, in the hardest years of the war with Aurangzeb. He kept the Maratha state alive when the Mughals held its capital.
Example
After Aurangzeb took the capital, Raigad, Rajaram fled south to the fort of Gingee, in present-day Tamil Nadu. This carried the Mughal–Maratha war into south India. Maratha forts held out, and Aurangzeb died in the Deccan in 1707 without defeating the Marathas.
Don't confuse with
- Sambhaji: Rajaram's elder brother. He was the Chhatrapati before Rajaram and was executed by Aurangzeb.
