History glossary

Also called: Chhatrapati Sambhaji · Topic: The Marathas · NCERT: Class 8, Ch 3 "The Marathas"

Meaning

Sambhaji was Shivaji's elder son and the second Chhatrapati, or Maratha king. He ruled from 1681 to 1689. In his time the Marathas were the only power stopping Aurangzeb from taking the whole Deccan. His death made the Maratha people even more determined to resist.

Example

Aurangzeb first conquered Bijapur and Golconda. Then in 1689 he captured Sambhaji, tortured him and executed him, and took the Maratha capital, Raigad. As a boy, Sambhaji had joined Mughal service under the Treaty of Purandar. He later escaped from Agra with Shivaji, hidden in baskets of fruit and sweets.

Don't confuse with

  • Rajaram: Sambhaji's younger brother. He became Chhatrapati after Sambhaji's death and ruled from Gingee.
