Belgaum border dispute
Also called: Belagavi dispute · Topic: Federalism and Centre-State Relations · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 7 "Federalism"
Meaning
The Belgaum border dispute is a quarrel between Maharashtra and Karnataka. Maharashtra claims Belagavi (Belgaum) and nearby villages. These areas have many Marathi speakers but were placed in the Kannada-speaking state when states were reorganised by language in 1956. It shows how linguistic states can leave mixed-language border areas that two states both want.
Example
The Mahajan Commission (1966) largely backed Karnataka's position. Maharashtra did not accept this and took the matter to the Supreme Court, where the case is still pending.
Don't confuse with
- Inter-state river water disputes: water disputes go to special tribunals under Art. 262. Border disputes like Belagavi have no such tribunal and need political talks or court cases.
