Cauvery water dispute

Polity & Governance glossary

Also called: Kaveri water dispute · Topic: Federalism and Centre-State Relations · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 7 "Federalism"

Meaning

The Cauvery water dispute is a long fight over sharing the waters of the Cauvery river. The main rivals are Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and Kerala and Puducherry are also parties. Because it involves drinking water and farming, it flares up in dry years. It is a leading example of why river disputes are harder to settle than border disputes.

Example

A tribunal's 2007 award gave Tamil Nadu 419 TMC and Karnataka 270 TMC. (An award is the tribunal's final decision, and TMC means thousand million cubic feet of water.) On 16 February 2018, the Supreme Court changed these figures to 404.25 TMC for Tamil Nadu and 284.75 TMC for Karnataka. The Cauvery Water Management Authority (2018) now carries out the sharing.

Don't confuse with

  • Cauvery Water Management Authority: the dispute is the conflict itself. The Authority is the body set up in 2018 to put the final sharing into practice.
