Ravi-Beas water dispute
Topic: Federalism and Centre-State Relations · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 7 "Regional Aspirations"
Meaning
The Ravi-Beas water dispute is a quarrel among Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan over sharing the waters of the Ravi and Beas rivers. It is tied up with Punjab's politics and with the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal, which was meant to carry water to Haryana.
Example
The Eradi Tribunal (1986) came out of the Punjab Accord. In 2004 Punjab passed a law ending its water-sharing agreements. In 2016 the Supreme Court held that law unconstitutional, meaning it went against the Constitution. The SYL canal still has not been built.
Don't confuse with
- Cauvery water dispute: Cauvery involves southern states and has a working implementing body, the Cauvery Water Management Authority. Ravi-Beas involves northern states, and the SYL canal is still unbuilt.
