Cauvery Water Management Authority
Also called: CWMA · Topic: Federalism and Centre-State Relations · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) is a body set up in 2018 after the Supreme Court's Cauvery judgment. Its job is to make sure the water is actually shared as the court decided among Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry. A Cauvery Water Regulation Committee helps it with day-to-day release of water. It matters because a decision on paper is useless unless someone puts it into practice.
Example
In a dry year, Tamil Nadu may complain that Karnataka is releasing too little water. The CWMA, with its regulation committee, looks at the flows and directs the releases due under the 2018 judgment, which gave Tamil Nadu 404.25 TMC and Karnataka 284.75 TMC.
Don't confuse with
- Inter-state water disputes tribunal: a tribunal decides how the water should be shared. The CWMA only carries out a sharing that has already been decided.
