Bodoland movement
Also called: Bodo movement · Topic: Regional Aspirations: J&K, Punjab, the North-East and Accommodation · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 7 "Regional Aspirations"
Meaning
The Bodoland movement is the struggle of the Bodos, a tribal community of Assam, for a separate state. It used both agitation and armed insurgency. The government answered with autonomy rather than a new state. It gave the Bodos self-rule under the Sixth Schedule, the part of the Constitution that gives tribal areas their own self-governing councils. It matters as an example of using asymmetric federalism (different rules for different areas) to meet tribal demands.
Example
- 1993: a Bodo Autonomous Council was set up.
- 2003: it was replaced by the Bodoland Territorial Council under the Sixth Schedule.
- January 2020: the Bodo Accord was signed with all the NDFB factions. It created the Bodoland Territorial Region with wider powers.
Don't confuse with
- Gorkhaland movement: a statehood demand by the Nepali-speaking Gorkhas of Darjeeling in West Bengal. It has not been met through the Sixth Schedule. It was met through hill councils set up separately.
