Gorkhaland movement
Topic: Regional Aspirations: J&K, Punjab, the North-East and Accommodation · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Gorkhaland movement is the demand for a separate state for the Nepali-speaking Gorkhas of the Darjeeling hills in West Bengal. The Gorkhas want their own state to protect their identity and interests. Instead of a new state, the Gorkhas have been given hill councils with some self-rule. It matters as a statehood demand from outside the North-East's Seven Sisters that has been met only partly.
Example
The movement led to the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council in 1988. The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, a body with more local powers, replaced it in 2012. The demand for a full state continues.
Don't confuse with
- Bodoland movement: a statehood demand by the Bodos of Assam. It was met through Sixth Schedule councils and the 2020 Bodo Accord.
