Manipur ethnic violence

Meaning
Manipur ethnic violence is the conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities of Manipur that began in May 2023. It was triggered by a High Court order on giving Scheduled Tribe status to Meiteis. That status brings special protections and reserved benefits. The conflict matters because it shows that drawing new boundaries cannot solve problems where ethnic groups claim the same land.
Example
After months of violence and a breakdown of governance, President's rule began in Manipur in February 2025. Under President's rule, the Union government directly runs a state when its government cannot function under the Constitution. The status of the state government should be checked for current updates.
