Business Advisory Committee
Topic: Parliamentary Procedure, Committees and Privileges · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Business Advisory Committee is a committee in each House that plans the House's timetable. It decides how much time should go to each bill, debate and other item of business. In the Lok Sabha it is chaired by the Speaker. In the Rajya Sabha it is chaired by the Chairman. Members from different parties sit on it, so the timetable can be agreed across parties.
Example
At the start of a session, the committee may decide that a major bill gets six hours of debate and that a discussion on floods gets two hours. The House then follows this plan.
Don't confuse with
- Committee on Private Members' Bills and Resolutions: a Lok Sabha committee chaired by the Deputy Speaker. It sorts private members' bills and allots time only to them and to private members' resolutions.
