Meaning

The Committee on Empowerment of Women is a joint committee of Parliament, which means it has members from both Houses. It has 30 members and was set up in 1997. It studies how government policies and programmes affect women. It checks the steps being taken to give women equal status and dignity in all fields. It also considers the reports of the National Commission for Women. It then recommends improvements to the government.

Example

The committee may examine how well a central scheme for women's safety or health is working. It can call ministry officials to explain any gaps and then suggest changes in its report.
