Joint Committee on Offices of Profit

Polity & Governance glossary

Topic: Parliamentary Procedure, Committees and Privileges · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

This is a committee of 15 members: 10 from the Lok Sabha and 5 from the Rajya Sabha. Under Art. 102(1)(a), an MP is disqualified if they hold an "office of profit" under the government. An office of profit is a government post that brings pay or other benefits, unless Parliament has exempted it by law. The committee examines committees and bodies set up by the government. It then advises which posts should disqualify MPs and which should not. Its advice helps Parliament decide which posts to exempt by law.

Example

Suppose the government sets up a new board and wants some MPs as members. The committee examines whether being on the board should disqualify an MP. It then recommends whether the post should be exempted.
