Quantitative data

Indian Economy glossary

Topic: Economic Data: Census, NSS, Surveys and Statistical Tools · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 1 "Introduction (Statistics for Economics)"; Class 11, Ch 8 "Use of Statistical Tools"

Meaning

Quantitative data are data that can be measured in numbers. Prices, incomes, taxes paid and crop output are examples. Because they are numbers, you can calculate with them. You can find averages and growth rates, and you can check how two such variables move together.

Example

NCERT notes that India's rice output rose from 39.58 million tonnes (1974-75) to 106.5 million tonnes (2013-14). The study note puts it at about 150 million tonnes in 2024-25 but marks that figure for verification.

Don't confuse with

  • Qualitative data: these record qualities such as gender or skill level, which cannot be measured in numbers.
