Target group

Indian Economy glossary

Topic: Economic Data: Census, NSS, Surveys and Statistical Tools · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 8 "Use of Statistical Tools"

Meaning

The target group is the set of people a study focuses on. It depends on the study's objective, so it must be chosen before any data are collected. If the wrong group is surveyed, the data will not answer the question being asked.

Example

A study on cars targets middle and high-income groups, since they are the likely buyers. A study on soap targets all rural and urban consumers. A study on safe drinking water targets both rural and urban people.

Don't confuse with

  • Sample: the target group is everyone the study is about. A sample is the smaller part of that group from which data are actually taken.
