Border roads
Topic: Transport and Communication in India · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 7 "Transport and Communication"
Meaning
Border roads are roads built in remote areas near India's international borders. They link these areas to major cities and carry supplies to border villages and army posts. In India, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO, set up in May 1960) builds them along the northern and north-eastern borders. BRO also clears snow from high mountain roads and helps the development of these areas. Border roads matter for both defence and the people living in the region.
Example
BRO built the Chandigarh-Manali-Leh road, which runs at an average height of 4,270 m and crosses high passes into Ladakh. BRO also built the Atal Tunnel (opened 2020) under the Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh.
Don't confuse with
- International highways: roads that link India with neighbouring countries, such as the Lahore-Delhi bus route through Wagah. Border roads run inside India, near the border.
