Zojila Tunnel
Topic: Transport and Communication in India · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Zojila Tunnel is a road tunnel of about 13 km being built under the Zojila Pass. Heavy snow closes the pass in winter, which cuts Ladakh off by road. The tunnel will keep the road open all year. When finished, it is set to be Asia's longest two-way road tunnel, meaning traffic will move in both directions inside it (verify current).
Example
The tunnel lies on the Srinagar-Leh road, between the Kashmir valley and Ladakh.
Don't confuse with
- Atal Tunnel: already open (2020) under the Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh, on the Manali side. Zojila is on the Srinagar side of the route to Ladakh.
