Common Alerting Protocol
Also called: SACHET · Topic: Natural Hazards and Disaster Management in India · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) is a standard international format for disaster warnings. Because every warning is written in the same format, it can be sent out over many channels at once, such as SMS, TV, radio and apps. In India, NDMA's platform called SACHET uses CAP. It sends warnings by SMS and cell broadcast (a message sent to every phone in an area), only to people in the area at risk, and in local languages. The warnings come from agencies such as IMD (weather), CWC (floods), INCOIS (tsunamis), DGRE (avalanches) and GSI (landslides).
Example
When IMD issues a cyclone warning for coastal Odisha, SACHET can send the alert straight to mobile phones in the threatened districts.
