Meaning

The National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) is India's national institute for training and research in disaster management. It is based in New Delhi. It began in 1995, and the Disaster Management Act 2005 made it a statutory body, meaning one set up by law. It trains officials, studies disasters and helps build the skills of people who manage them.

Example

From New Delhi, NIDM trains government officers and disaster managers from states and districts in planning and response.

Don't confuse with

  • NDMA (National Disaster Management Authority): NDMA is chaired by the Prime Minister and sets policies, plans and guidelines. NIDM does training and research.
  • NDRF (National Disaster Response Force): NDRF is the rescue force that goes to disaster sites. NIDM is an institute, not a response team.
