National and State Disaster Response Funds
Also called: SDRF · Topic: Natural Hazards and Disaster Management in India · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
These are the funds India uses for immediate relief after notified disasters. Each state first spends from its State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF). The Centre pays 75% of the SDRF, or 90% for northeastern and Himalayan states. When a disaster is severe, the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) gives extra money. The Fifteenth Finance Commission split disaster money into two windows: response (80%) and mitigation (20%) (check the current status).
Example
Uttarakhand is a Himalayan state, so the Centre pays 90% of its SDRF. When a disaster there is too big for the SDRF, extra money can come from the National Disaster Response Fund.
Don't confuse with
- National Disaster Response Force (NDRF): it has the same short name. The force is the rescue team formed in 2006 from central armed police forces. The fund is money.
