Notified disasters
Topic: Natural Hazards and Disaster Management in India · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Notified disasters are the disasters officially listed for relief from the State and National Disaster Response Funds. The list is: cyclone, drought, earthquake, fire, flood, tsunami, hailstorm, landslide, avalanche, cloudburst, pest attack, and frost or cold wave. Only these qualify for regular relief money from the funds. A state may also spend up to 10% of its SDRF on local disasters that are not on the list, such as lightning (check the current status). Heat wave is not a notified disaster (check the current status).
Example
The Wayanad landslides in Kerala on 30 July 2024 killed over 200 people. Landslide is a notified disaster, so relief could come from these funds.
Don't confuse with
- Local (state-specific) disasters: these are hazards like lightning that are not on the national list. A state can still use part of its SDRF for them.
