Comprehensive port
Topic: International Trade: Patterns, Ports and the WTO · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 8 "International Trade"
Meaning
A comprehensive port handles both bulk cargo, such as ore, grain and oil, and general cargo, such as packaged and manufactured goods, in large volumes. It combines the work of an industrial port and a commercial port. Most of the world's great ports are of this type, because large trading hubs need to handle every kind of cargo.
Example
Rotterdam, at the mouth of the Rhine in the Netherlands, is a comprehensive port and Europe's largest port. Singapore and Shanghai are other examples.
Don't confuse with
- Industrial port: handles only bulk cargo. The statement "most great ports are industrial ports" is FALSE, because most great ports are comprehensive ports.
