Meaning

A naval port is a port that matters only for defence. It does not handle trade goods. It serves warships and has workshops where they are repaired. Its value is strategic, which means it helps a country guard its coast and sea routes.

Example

Karwar on the coast of Karnataka is home to the naval base INS Kadamba. Kochi in Kerala is another Indian naval port. Visakhapatnam and Mumbai are also major naval bases, but they handle a lot of trade as well.

Don't confuse with

  • Commercial port: handles general cargo, such as packed and manufactured goods, and passengers. A naval port handles warships only.
  • Port of call: a stop on a main sea route where trading ships take on fuel, water and food. It is not a base for warships.
