Industrial port
Topic: International Trade: Patterns, Ports and the WTO · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 8 "International Trade"
Meaning
An industrial port specialises in bulk cargo. Bulk cargo is loose goods moved in large amounts without packing, such as grain, sugar, ore, oil and chemicals. Such ports have special handling equipment, such as conveyors (moving belts), silos (tall storage towers) and oil terminals. They matter because industries need steady, cheap supplies of raw materials and fuel.
Example
Paradip, on the Odisha coast near the Mahanadi delta, is India's example of an industrial port.
Don't confuse with
- Commercial port: handles general cargo (packaged and manufactured goods) and passengers, not loose bulk goods.
- Comprehensive port: handles both bulk and general cargo in large volumes.
