Topic: International Trade: Patterns, Ports and the WTO · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 8 "International Trade"

Meaning

An oil port is a port that deals in processing and shipping oil. There are two kinds. A tanker port loads crude oil onto tankers, which are large ships built to carry liquids. A refinery port has a refinery, a plant that turns crude oil into fuels such as petrol and diesel. Oil ports link oil fields to the countries that buy the oil.

Example

Maracaibo in Venezuela is a tanker port. It ships out oil from the oil fields around Lake Maracaibo. Esskhira in Tunisia and Tripoli in Lebanon are also tanker ports. Abadan on the Persian Gulf is a refinery port.

Don't confuse with

  • Industrial port: handles many kinds of bulk cargo, such as grain, sugar, ore and chemicals. An oil port specialises in oil alone.
