Manas Biosphere Reserve
Topic: Biodiversity and its Conservation · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 5 "Natural Vegetation"
Meaning
Manas Biosphere Reserve was set up in 1989 in Assam, along the border with Bhutan. A biosphere reserve has a protected core, a buffer zone and a transition zone where people live. At its centre is Manas National Park. The park is a World Heritage Site (1985) and was one of the first nine tiger reserves. It is home to the golden langur, pygmy hog and wild buffalo. The biosphere reserve itself is not on UNESCO's World Network.
Example
Manas National Park was put on UNESCO's danger list from 1992 to 2011, and was taken off after it recovered. It still shelters the Critically Endangered pygmy hog.
Don't confuse with
- World Heritage Site vs biosphere reserve: Manas is a World Heritage Site, but its biosphere reserve is not on UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere list. These are two separate UNESCO lists.
