Topic: Biodiversity and its Conservation · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 5 "Natural Vegetation"
Meaning
Nokrek Biosphere Reserve was set up in 1988 around Nokrek peak in the Garo hills of Meghalaya. A biosphere reserve has a protected core, a buffer zone and a transition zone where people live. It protects wild citrus (Citrus indica). These wild plants are a gene pool, a store of genes that can be used to breed better orange and lemon crops. The reserve also shelters the red panda and is on UNESCO's World Network.
Example
In the Garo hills of Meghalaya, wild citrus trees grow in Nokrek's forests. Their genetic variety is a back-up for farmed citrus.
