Topic: Biodiversity and its Conservation · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 5 "Natural Vegetation"
Meaning
Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve was set up in 1988 in Uttarakhand, around the Nanda Devi peak. A biosphere reserve has a protected core, a buffer zone and a transition zone where people live. It includes the Nanda Devi and Valley of Flowers national parks. Together these form a World Heritage Site, listed in 1988 and extended in 2005. The reserve is on UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
Example
The Valley of Flowers, a high meadow in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, is covered with alpine flowers in summer. It lies within the reserve.
Don't confuse with
- Nanda Devi National Park: this is the strictly protected park at the core. The biosphere reserve is the larger area around it, which includes villages in the transition zone.
