Meaning

Adamgarh is a group of rock shelters near Hoshangabad (Narmadapuram), on the Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh. People lived there in the Mesolithic period, and the site has many microliths (tiny stone tools). It gives some of the earliest evidence in India of domestication, which means bringing animals under human control. The shelters also have rock paintings.

Example

Bones of animals such as dogs, cattle, sheep, goats and pigs were found with microliths at Adamgarh. Some of them may be from domesticated animals, possibly c. 5000 BCE. This means herding may have started while people still hunted and gathered.

Don't confuse with

  • Bagor in Rajasthan is the other well-known early domestication site. It is an open-air site on the Kothari river, not a group of rock shelters.
