Topic: Prehistory: Human Origins and Stone Age Cultures · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Sarai Nahar Rai is a Mesolithic site in Pratapgarh district, Uttar Pradesh, in the middle Ganga plain. It has microliths (tiny stone tools), hearths (fireplaces for cooking and warmth) and human burials. It is one of the earliest known settlements of hunter-gatherers in the Ganga plain. People lived there near lakes after the Ice Age ended, c. 12,000 years ago.
Example
At Sarai Nahar Rai, archaeologists found graves of people buried inside the living area, along with microliths and hearths. This shows that people stayed at the site for long periods rather than only passing through.
Don't confuse with
- Mahadaha and Damdama are other Mesolithic sites in the same district. Mahadaha is best known for double burials of a man and a woman.
