Meaning

Lakhudiyar is a group of rock shelters on the Suyal river near Almora in Uttarakhand. The name means "one lakh caves". The shelters have prehistoric paintings of humans, animals and wavy or zig-zag lines. The colours are red, black and white. Lakhudiyar shows that rock art was made in the Himalayan region too, not just in central India.

Example

One painting at Lakhudiyar shows a row of human figures holding hands, as if they are dancing together. It is a well-known example of how early people showed group activity in their art.

Don't confuse with

  • Bhimbetka in Madhya Pradesh is the largest and best-known rock art site in India and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lakhudiyar is a smaller site in the Kumaon hills.
