Meaning

Mahadaha and Damdama are Mesolithic sites in Pratapgarh district, Uttar Pradesh, in the middle Ganga plain. People lived beside lakes, hunting animals, fishing and gathering wild plants. Both sites have many human burials, so they tell us how these early people treated their dead. They show that hunter-gatherers lived in the Ganga plain long before farming villages appeared there.

Example

At Mahadaha, some graves are double burials of a man and a woman placed together, and bone ornaments were found with the dead. At Damdama, archaeologists found many graves, including some with more than one person.

Don't confuse with

  • Sarai Nahar Rai is another Mesolithic site in the same Pratapgarh district. It is known for hearths (fireplaces) and burials, but not for the famous man-and-woman double burials.
