Meaning

The Atala Masjid is a mosque at Jaunpur in present-day Uttar Pradesh. Work on it began under Firuz Shah Tughlaq. It was completed in 1408 under Ibrahim Shah of the Sharqi dynasty, which ruled Jaunpur. Its most famous feature is a huge gateway screen, called a pylon, in front of the prayer hall. This tall screen hides the dome behind it. It became the mark of the Sharqi style of building.

Example

The Atala Masjid, completed in 1408, is the model for later Jaunpur mosques. The best-known of these is the Jami Masjid of Jaunpur, which copies its tall pylon screen.
