Also called: Ahmedabad World Heritage City · Topic: Turkic Invasions and the Delhi Sultanate · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Historic City of Ahmedabad is the old walled city founded in 1411 by Sultan Ahmad Shah I of Gujarat. It has sultanate mosques and tombs. It also has pols, which are tightly packed neighbourhoods of wooden houses with shared gates. In 2017 it became India's first city on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It shows how a sultanate capital grew into a trading city that people still live in.
Example
The Jami Masjid of Ahmedabad was built under Ahmad Shah I in 1424. Its pillared prayer hall uses Hindu and Jain styles of carving. The Sidi Saiyyed mosque, with its carved stone "tree of life" windows, is another landmark of the city.
Don't confuse with
- Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park: a Gujarat World Heritage Site listed in 2004. It is a mostly abandoned capital of Mahmud Begada, not a living city.
